Pocketstone Staff

David Vale was the Pocketstone's first baker. It wasn't so much that he was good at it, but he was exacting. His idea was to make the recipes so explicit that a caveman could follow them.

David Vale was the Pocketstone's first baker. It wasn't so much that he was good at it, but he was exacting. His idea was to make the recipes so explicit that a caveman could follow them.

Of course, it was just a matter of time (Halloween, to pin it on a day) until he went mad, assuming the somewhat frightening persona of Dr. Dough, the mad baker.

While Dr. Dough preferred to work in, well dough, others preferred clay. Here the artist Sunti from across the street sculpted him in just 22 minutes. (More important figures take up to two months.)

Eventually, he found solace in catching up on his expense reports. It wasn't so much that he liked doing them, but he liked getting Karie off his back about them.

Karie always wanted a restaurant and she's the kind of person who likes to be involved. Sometimes it was difficult to get her off the construction site and into the office.

Versatility is a virtue at the pocketstone. You say you don't do windows? Not an option here.

Karie never met a piece of construction equipment she didn't like. Here she cranks the cook line hood into place.

Karie believes that all guests to the Pocketstone Cafe should receive a warm welcome, especially state building inspectors.

We were all happy on opening day to see that Karie could give up the construction hat and transform into a restaurateur.

Carolyn Vale, the Pocketstone Cafe's third partner, preferred to devote her efforts to tuning the menu and testing the results. Here she consults with Karen Ricciardi on some new menu items.

Carolyn found herself at the police station getting fingerprinted. Not that she'd done anything felonious, but she wanted to get a license to sell liquor.

Engineering student Nate Bell joined us for the summer, cooking, prepping, and washing the dishes.

Sous Chef Ty Heaton listens as hostess Brittani Stidham explains the needs of the front of the house.

Sous Chef Chris Robinson, known for his kick-it-up-a-notch attitude, spices one of his dishes.

High-school senior Conner Coleman kept in shape for sports by wrestling the dish line all summer.

Prep cook Carson Roberts consults with Chelsea Goodale on the ripeness of a new box of avocados.

Paulette Kelleher is often the first face you see at the Pocketstone, greeting guests and serving them her own special style of espresso drinks.

Amy Boese proved to be a fast learner, getting her waitress training at the Pocketstone.

No, this photo has not been Photoshopped. Tanya Dopps really does have a very limber neck, the better to keep tabs on the needs of her guests.

Karen Ricciardi has an affinity for equine visitors. So, if she's your waitress, feel free to eat like a horse.

Seasoned veteran Toni Sherry guides waitress trainee Briana Stidham through her paces as a waitress.

Graphic artist and musician Leoria Twist plays the grill like a musical instrument.

Server Shari Disney finds it difficult to supress her smile as she serves our customers.

Apprentice baker Alison Nelson found that, like most bakers before her (Dave was an exception), baking begins on the dish line.

Chloe Vale, on the other hand, graduated from baker to chief dishwasher. Then she forsook the kitchen to become a hostess and barista.

We held an end-of-summer going-back-to-school party at Wayfarer's Park. This picture includes almost everyone who worked at the Pocketstone Cafe during the summer of 2010.

Brett Sward, one of our bussers, demonstrates the goofy smile that so captivates the front-of-house staff.

Not sure which fairy tale this photo reminds us of, but the black hoodies suggest something Grimm.

Dillon Kuntz set out to make the world's biggest pancake. We're not sure he succeeded, but he and Mitchel Harsh may have downed the biggest pancake ever eaten by two guys.

If you work at the Pocketstone, sooner or later you're going to get tapped to be in an ad. Karie and Dave were the first.

Dave turned out to be a glutton for fame, here portraying Ebeneezer Scrooge in a Christmas ad.

Dave has never taken a picture of Karie that she liked. Of course he's never taken a picture of her that he didn't like. So it all evens out.

Sous Chef Ty Heaton got into the act portraying Bugs Moran, a Chicago gangster, for the St. Valentines Day (Massacre) ad.

No, it's not the Playboy Club. Insofar as we're aware, the Playboy Club doesn't serve Eggs Benedict.
